A Chronicle of Imperial Decor
The project is based on the collection of the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery. The Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery was built in the outer garden of the Meiji Shrine to commemorate the death of Emperor Meiji. The permanent collection of 80 paintings, 40 Japanese and 40 oil paintings each, was completed in 1926 and depicts the history of modernization and imperialism in Japan, focusing on the life of Emperor Meiji and Empress Meiji. This work is a reconstruction of this collection of propaganda paintings, removing idols, portraits from the collection.
明治記念絵画館のプロパガンダ絵画コレクションから偶像や肖像を取り除いて再構築したもの。明治記念絵画館は明治天皇の死を悼んで明治神宮外苑に建造、明治天皇、皇后の生涯を中心に日本の近代化と帝国主義の歴史が描かれた日本画、油彩画各40点の1926年(大正15年)に完成した絵画コレクションが常設展示されている。
